Praia de Iracema (Iracema Beach) – Recently revitalized by the City Hall of Fortaleza, this area is one of the symbols of Ceará’s capital and was named in honor of the “Virgin with the Honey Lips,” the muse of the classic novel by Ceará writer José de Alencar. Iracema Beach is home to iconic landmarks such as the English Bridge (Ponte dos Ingleses), the landfill promenade (Aterro), and the breakwaters (espigões). From here, you can take in the most beautiful sunset in the city. The area also features plenty of open space for sports and physical activities.
Feirinha de Artesanato da Beira-Mar (Beira-Mar Handicraft Market) – Renowned for its wide variety of local products, the famous Beira-Mar handicraft market is a must-visit spot in Fortaleza. Hundreds of stalls set up along the boardwalk at the corner of Desembargador Moreira Avenue on Meireles Beach. It operates daily starting at 5:00 PM.
Mercado dos Peixes (Fish Market) – Located along Beira-Mar in the Mucuripe neighborhood and recently renovated by the City Hall of Fortaleza, the New Fish Market is the best place in the city to buy seafood in terms of value. Pink wild shrimp, white shrimp, lobster, fish such as red snapper, king mackerel, mutton snapper, squid, octopus, mussels, sea crabs, and many other delicacies can be found here year-round.
Praia do Futuro (Futuro Beach) – Located about 10 km from the city center, Praia do Futuro spans 8 km in length. It features countless beach kiosks (barracas de praia) equipped with full bar and restaurant facilities to welcome visitors. The Fortaleza City Hall undertook a major revitalization of the area, standardizing sidewalks, adding landscaping, drainage, street signage, a bike lane, new light poles, and renovating the entire 8-kilometer road system.
Praia do Cumbuco (Cumbuco Beach) – Located roughly 30 km by car from Fortaleza, Cumbuco Beach is one of the most popular destinations in the metropolitan region. Situated in a peaceful village, it offers great infrastructure for a day trip. Cumbuco is home to excellent hotels, such as Carmel Cumbuco and the all-inclusive resort Vila Galé Cumbuco—fantastic options for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of a major city. A highlight of this beach is the buggy or ATV tours offered through the surrounding areas, which come with the choice of being “with or without thrills.” If you have free time, take the tour; it passes through Cumbuco’s beautiful coastline, the local sand dunes, Cauípe Lagoon (a popular spot for kitesurfing), and can go as far as the Port of Pecém. Many visitors describe the buggy tour as the best part of Cumbuco!
Porto das Dunas / Beach Park – Considered the best water park in Brazil, featuring over 17 rides and attractions. Its standout highlight is one of the tallest and most extreme waterslides in the world, standing at 41 meters high with speeds reaching up to 110 km/h. Located right on the beachfront, it offers a spacious buffet restaurant serving typical Ceará cuisine alongside international dishes, as well as a resort with comfortable, modern spaces and a full range of amenities. Sun loungers under the shade of coconut trees for those seeking relaxation, extreme rides, numerous shops, cafes, and a restaurant all add to the fun.
